Be Like Bamboos

I bought some Kang Kong seeds recently to have some fun growing my own vegetable.

The seeds looked like stones and I wondered, “Are these really going to sprout?!”

I planted the seeds in a pot with soil, watered it and went to sleep.

The next morning, nothing grew out of the soil!

The second day, same, nothing!

“I knew it! The seeds were stone-like. They must have been spoiled!”

“Well, give it another day.” I changed my thought.

On the third day morning, I was surprised to see there were sprouts!

“Hahaha!” I laughed, “Well, well, this was what I’ve been telling my clients!”

The change in your voice is gradual. Sometimes, it is as if nothing was changing in your voice or your breathing, but it IS changing, just that you can’t see the change that’s happening inside your body.

When change is not happening, guess what happens to our psyche?

“The seeds must have been spoiled!”

We start to question ourselves or whether what we are practicing really works!

It took planting my Kang Kong seeds to realize that.

It reminds me of the story about bamboos.

When you plant the bamboo shoots, for the first four years, nothing comes out of the soil! FOUR YEARS!

People who grow bamboos for the first time must have been so disappointed, thinking there must be something wrong with the bamboo shoots.

Miraculously, with patience and faith, the bamboo shoots will come out of the soil in the fifth year and grow exponentially as 80 feet tall in 6 weeks! That’s 3 times of the height of a double-deck bus in 1.5 months!

So, it wasn’t that there was nothing happening in the soil for the first four years. There was everything happening! The bamboo shoots were developing such a strong root system that it can support the exponential growth once they break out of the soil.

Bruce Lee says, “Be like water.”

Let’s say, “Be like bamboos!”

The next time when you are doubting whether there’s change happening in your breathing or voice, think of the bamboos.
