I was doing voice training with a group of trainers recently. One of their biggest challenges was losing their voice easily at the end of the day.
Losing voice after talking for hours is a problem many people face. I constantly receive calls for help on this. You probably are also concerned about it.
The reason you lose your voice after talking for even a short period of time is that you put too much pressure on your vocal folds (vocal cords). To lessen the pressure, you must power your voice with proper breathing and use major cavities in your body to amplify your voice.
Breath is the power of your voice and determines the quality of your voice. Proper breathing is the prerequisite to amplify your voice with your own body cavities. Here we are referring to diaphragmatic breathing, using your diaphragm to support your breath. If you do not engage your diaphragm in your breathing, you’ll never be able to amplify your voice with your body cavities and you’ll always lose your voice after talking for some time.
Once you’ve mastered diaphragmatic breathing, the key to talking for hours without losing your voice is to use your body cavities to amplify your voice. Why do we use a microphone for a larger audience? It’s to amplify our voice. Have you ever realized that you have your own in-built voice amplifier that could help you be heard clearly without straining your vocal folds? Last week, I had training and speaking for five straight days. The last day I was speaking to two groups of 100 people each, without using a microphone I didn’t experience any discomfort at all. It was all because I used my own in-built voice amplifier effectively. You can also achieve that through learning and practicing.
Many people argue, “I could always use a microphone.” The problem is that microphone will not help you lessen the strain on your vocal folds. If you do not give attention and care to your vocal folds, in the long run you’ll suffer from vocal abuse, which could bring permanent damage to your vocal folds. Learn how to breathe properly and use your own voice amplifier, you’ll not only never suffer from voice loss, but discover a fuller, richer and more resonant voice.
